atha yoganusasanam:
(and now the practice of yoga)
Practices like yoga, Tai Chi, and Qigong are more than fitness routines. Without question these practices offer a number of physical benefits however at Painted Lotus Yoga and Wellness you can expect our classes to be holistic in nature by including breathing practices, meditation, mindfulness, philosophy, humor, and community connection.
All facets of yoga, Tai Chi and Qigong are offered as methods for personal growth and spiritual exploration. As spiritual practices, they are experienced as inclusive universal methods of bringing depth and practical value to your everyday life. These practices are wonderful adjuncts to talk therapy, compliment medical care, and deepen your connection and understanding of whatever your personal philosophical, religious or spiritual beliefs may be. Although every person’s journey is their own, the rewards and changes in your life through these practices can be soul-deep. Whatever your personal reasons for practicing, we are here to meet you where you are and guide you in the most supportive methods for creating a practice that is sustainable and relevant to your needs.

Yoga is a broad category of practices with a rich history that offers numerous physical, mental, and emotional health benefits.  By far one of the most accessible forms of physical movement to the widest variety of people, yoga is more than a fitness program. Our yoga classes are led by skilled instructors with hundreds of hours of training and experience in supporting a variety of physical abilities, body types, and degrees of experience with yoga. Throughout the development of your practice, you will be introduced to yoga's history and lineages while gaining an understanding of yoga terminology, philosophy, breathing practices, mindfulness, and meditation as tools to support your personal growth and development. Whether you are in the mood for a high energy flow, prefer the slow smoldering fire of a more static practice, or the serenity found in stillness, we have a weekly class, class series or workshop designed to meet you right where you are. Supported in vibrant community, allow us to guide you in cultivating a yoga practice that is uniquely your own.
A few benefits of a consistent yoga practice can include:
* regulating the stress response by toning the parasympathetic nervous system
* relieving muscular tension
* increasing strength and range of motion
* improving joint stability
* increasing breath capacity
* improving focus and concentration
* better sleep
Mindful Movement:
Find class descriptions by clicking on the class name on our schedule.
Supported by evidence-based research, mindful movement practices like Tai Chi and Qigong are widely recognized for their physical, mental, and emotional health and wellness benefits.  Long before modern day researchers discovered them, both were an integral part of Traditional Chinese Medicine practices. Rooted in Taoism, the essence of Tai Chi and Qigong seeks to find harmony and balance through slow, continuous movement (forms) and controlled breathing. Our classes are led by long-time practitioner, Rebecca Brooks, who practiced and trained at the Tai Chi for Health Institute. This low-impact, dynamic moving meditation helps focus a restless mind and is well-suited to those of us who find serenity by releasing nervous tension through movement.  Both practices are a wonderful compliment to more energetic and physically demanding martial arts disciplines.
Benefits of continued practice may include:
* lowering high blood pressure
* improving strength and flexibility
* improved balance and coordination
* reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression
* improves memory and cognitive function
* helps with pain managemt
* improves symptoms of arthritis
Meditation and Mindfulness
No other yoga practices are as misunderstood and underutilized as mediation and mindfulness. The two are not the same but do share many of the same benefits by improving mental, physical, and emotional health. At Painted Lotus Yoga and Wellness, occasionally classes or workshops that focus solely on understanding and developing these practices, independent of a postural yoga class, will be offered. More often, you will discover that these techniques, along with a variety of breathing practices, are in some way woven into the fabric of every yoga class offered at Painted Lotus. Meditation is perhaps one of the most challenging practices offered in yoga but it is the heart of the practice and the foundation that can lead to better overall vitality and harmony in your day to day life.
