ABOUT THE PRACTICE:
Qigong, pronounced "chee gung", is an ancient Chinese body, mind, and spirit practice, valued for enhancing health and wellness for over 2500 years. "Qi/chi" translates as "life's energy" and "gong" is form of physical practice. Qigong is a limb of Traditional Chinese Medicine based on the idea that nature, without human interference, is balanced and harmonious. Being part of nature, humans have the capacity for achieving mental, physical, and spiritual harmony and balance through practices like Qigong that generate and cultivate qi, or life's energy. The practice of Qigong supports the management of energy levels, regulates health, and brings balance to life. The primary focus of Qigong is the balancing of yin and yang, or opposing forces and feelings. Supported by evidence-based research, Qigong is promoted by the World Health Organization for its myriad health benefits.
Qigong practice consists of sequenced movements known as forms. These sequenced movements correspond to accupoints and meridian pathways in the body. A Qigong form might be practiced repetitively or as a flow. The most foundational principle in qigong movement is patience. Forms are typically characterized by slow, continuous movement but can be practiced quite vigorously as well. Regular Qigong practice has been shown to improve strength, balance, memory, to keep joints healthy, enhancing overall health and reducing stress and tension. For the motivated student, Qigong is also a practice of self-reflection, an exploration of life's challenges and an exercise in perseverance in finding your path. It is estimated that there are over 7000 Qigong forms so you will never be at a loss for a new challenge!
